The Up n' Comer Rhyme n' Lyric Spotlight
The "Rhyme n' Lyric" committee got together in 2009 in order to find "Up n' Coming" talent in either the "Rhyme" (Cowboy Poetry) or "Lyric"
(Original Songwriter) categories and to give winners a stage, an audience, a spotlight...& reward them for the experience.
The core committee and judging panel consisted of Bob Westrop (The Gathering's own music & lyric guru), Allison Brock (CKUA Radio Network host & producer), Jen Kuhlwein (Alberta Views Magazine) and Martyn Hill (Talent Buyer & GoToAGig.com). They were joined at the judging table by locally-based singer / songwriter / author, Sid Marty, as well as local media representatives.
Between them they sure know their music, lyric and rhyme!!
For the three years that "The Spotlight" was an element of The Gathering, each winner was awarded a monetary prize by the generous sole sponsor:
J.R. Shore

Lyrics To "Poundmaker"
By: J.R. Shore (2010 Winner)
On account of my grandfather, they did not cut my hair at Stony Mountain Pen.
Hung treason on my shoulders for breathing prairie air; a charge I could not defend.
My father he made medicine. Mother was a mixed Cree, but it was grandfather who earned my name.
Sung to spirits of the bison heard as they hurried near the pound.
Me and grandfather just the same
I signed the treaty for my people. They stole our food, left us weak and feeble and soon to earth we fell.
The rebels as they led the fight were strong by day and weak by night, and then came word from Louis Riel.
Bridge:
Take my bones to Blackfoot crossing. Take my soul to Cut Knife Hill. Take my boots and give them to my son.
Let the buffalo hear my lonesome cry and carry me away.
Poundmaker Poundmaker, guilty as charged. The judge he spoke aloud.
Had I wanted war I would not be here now. I could be on prairie soil. You’ve got me here but I stand tall and unbowed
Bridge:
Take my bones to Blackfoot crossing. Take my soul to Cut Knife Hill. Take my boots and give them to my son.
Let the buffalo hear my lonesome cry and carry me away.
